Capacity and Asset Building Intern (Unpaid)

The Esther Coalition, Inc. is a tax exempt 501(c)(3) advocacy and empowerment organization with the sole purpose of educating and empowering young women and children to live holistically. We are launching three new community wide initiatives for FY 2012 to 2015. We provide advocacy and supportive services under the MemeBear Cares Initiative, Strengthening Young Mothers Initiative and Sista to Sista: Let’s Talk! Initiative.

We are seeking an individual to assist in grant research, writing and administration. The ideal candidate has a track record of securing grants from a variety of sources, has a passion for empowering young women and children. Responsibilities include identification of opportunities, proposal writing, relationship building with granting organizations and administration of awards sourced from local, regional, state, and national sources. In addition, this individual will assist the Marketing and Public Relations Intern in general writing for The Esther Coalition’s general and targeted marketing efforts. Experience in writing newsletters, press releases, web-based and emerging social media forums, annual reports and solicitation letters is a plus.

Some task may include, but not limited to:

  • Assisting with grant research and documentation.
  • Collecting statistical data, formatting data in a Word document and write drafts for grant submissions.
  • Creating a basic template for disseminating the organization’s community initiatives and upcoming events to potential event sponsors and funders.
  • Preparing grant applications for review and submission.

The ideal candidate has an excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, customer service, multi-tasking, and writing skills. A positive attitude is crucial and experience developing and managing partnerships with team members, higher education institutions, community organizations and businesses. Applicant must be comfortable with working independent and a part of a team. Must be able to work a minimum of 10 hours per week and attend a one (1) hour weekly meeting. A technical aptitude is required, including knowledge of WordPress, Microsoft Office Suite, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Preferred Qualifications:  Bachelor Degree in English, Communications or related field. A combination of at least two (2) years of experience or knowledge of grant writing and/or fund development. Experience working with government (state and federal) grants preferred but not required.
